Sản xuất Đầu tiên họ giết cha tôi

Vào ngày 23 tháng 7 năm 2015, có thông tin cho rằng Angelina Jolie sẽ đạo diễn bộ phim chuyển thể từ cuốn hồi ký First They Killed My Father của Loung Ung cho Netflix, do đó Jolie và Ung sẽ cùng biên kịch với nhau.[6] Jolie cũng sẽ sản xuất bộ phim cùng với Rithy Panh, trong khi con trai cô, Maddox Jolie-Pitt là giám đốc sản xuất.[6]

Quay phim

Quá trình quay phim chính được thực hiện vào đầu tháng 11 năm 2015 tại Siem Reap và kết thúc vào tháng 2 năm 2016 tại Battambang, Campuchia. Ngoài ra, việc ghi hình cũng diễn ra ở Phnom Penh.[7]
